AI Pioneers To Invest $550 Million in AI Start-ups

Get ready to see a wave of AI start-ups taking over the tech scene! Toronto-based Radical Ventures has secured a whopping $550 million in funding from some of the biggest names in the artificial intelligence industry including Eric Schmidt's (former Google CEO) family office. This marks a significant departure from the current trend of decreased tech dealmaking, and makes Radical's fund the largest of its kind. The group previously launched a $350 million fund in 2019 and plans to invest in companies that are building the models for a wide range of AI applications, as well as more narrowly focused start-ups that might build on top of those models. With the likes of Microsoft, SoftBank, IBM Ventures, and Alphabet's GV already making big bets on AI start-ups, it's clear that the future of technology lies in the hands of AI-powered companies.

Why this matters: It suggests that AI technology and its applications are becoming increasingly important and valuable in the business world, and that there is a growing market for AI-related products and services. Start building!

ChatGPT Plus Officially Launched (US Only)

Yesterday, OpenAI officially announced their premium version of ChatGPT, called ChatGPT Plus. We wrote last week that OpenAI were testing subscriptions at $42/mo and calling it ChatGPT Pro, but ChatGPT Plus appears to be the same product with a different name - and it's now $20/mo. Just to refresh, ChatGPT Plus will offer the following:

  • General access to ChatGPT, even during peak times

  • Faster response times

  • Priority access to new features and improvements

Why this matters: The monetization of ChatGPT is here a little bit faster than expected, but we're not too surprised. If you're outside of the US and want sign up to the waitlist for ChatGPT Plus, you can do so here (yes, it's really a Google Form from an almost $30 billion dollar company).

OpenAI Releases AI Detection Tool

Source: https://openai.com/blog/new-ai-classifier-for-indicating-ai-written-text/

Just two days ago OpenAI released their AI classifier, built to distinguish between human-written and AI-written text. In addition, they've developed resources for educators to familiarize themselves with ChatGPT. OpenAI themselves admits, however, that the classifier isn't perfect and can be easily fooled by editing AI text. However, we expect AI-text detectors to progress just as quickly text generation itself, so we don't expect this gap to last for long. Check out the classifier directly here.

Why this matters: If you're relying on using ChatGPT in contexts where you're not supposed to, ie. in school or for your business in an undisclosed way, you're probably safe for now (not legal advice). The conclusions drawn from OpenAI's classifier are not enough to definitively prove you've used AI generated text - but it won't be long before classifiers reach that capability.

It's like Siri, but It's ChatGPT

Imagine having a conversation with Siri and then realizing you're actually talking to ChatGPT! It's like having a virtual BFF that never runs out of witty responses and knowledge but is always in your pocket and ready to respond. Sounds too good to be true? Well, it's possible! The only things you need? An OpenAI account, a credit card with a few bucks to spare, and an iOS shortcut. Check out Eric Sinhartinger's post on Medium here to see the full how-to guide.

Picture of the Week

For our DALLE-2 picture of the week we have found another gem for you! Shoutout to Reddit user u/dr_singularity for giving us a clue on how a mixture between Otto von Bismarck and Garfield could have looked like, using the prompt "Painting of the orange cat Otto von Garfield, Count of Bismarck-Schönhausen, Duke of Lauenburg, Minister-President of Prussia. Depicted wearing a Prussian Pickelhaube and eating his favorite meal - lasagna.”
